In all honestly, this idea makes sense, in that it would allow a freer market for MSOs to compete in, offer lower transition costs (and less trouble, theoretically) for subscribers, and allow them to provide higher quality services. This is especially feasible now that Verizon has managed to put scalable multicast in the realm of reality. The problem will be who blinks first. The Cable MSOs like the monopolies they’ve locked their subscribers into, and once the first volley is fired, it’ll be all-out war for subscribers, which could cut into providers’ bottom lines, and possibly even wreck their subscriber base.
